Carlton Italian Fiesta @ Lygon St

Another lovely Sunday afternoon, this time, celebrating all things Italian right in Piazza Italia on Lygon St. Lots of games and play areas for the young ones, a mobile animal pen where kids and adults can come up close with little chooks and sheep… long queues at all the gelato stands! There is a display of vintage Italian cars- tiny little Fiats, Ferrari, Lamborghini ( see no touch ), Alfa Romeos etc. .. food, coffee, live music, busy Lygon St sidewalks… The very essence of italian culture!

Upcycling and Sustainability @ Garage Sale Trail

Garage Sale Trail, now it’s in third year is a national Australian event. It organises communities around the country to hold Garage Sales on the same day, today ! It’s about sustainability, by redistributing great stuff and saving it from landfill. Let’s reclaim, reuse and recycle!

At Boyd Southbank, the City of Melbourne provides the venue for garage sale vendors, live music, ABC live broadcasting, an entertaining auction supporting Youth Project, and a free hands-on workshop run by Kyle Bush, of HumbleBe, on how to up-cycle old fabric into photo frames and notebooks. Hand make these for Xmas , with love and creativity… something that comes from the heart and very good for the environment.

HumbleBe workshops combine creative ideas around ecological design, self sufficiency and a general appreciation of our place in our world.

Lost Without Time

Where have  the hands gone ? Will we not hear Waltzing Matilda today?  Meeting under the clocks equates to meeting at the front entrance of Flinders Station under all the clocks. .but meeting under this clock in the Melbourne Central atrium is just as popular .. And with so much happening here,  the train station below and a super tram stop outside on Swanston St, go meet someone under this gigantic clock!

Operation Christmas Child

The Power of a Simple Gift.

October is national collection month for Australia and New Zealand. Shoeboxes filled with gifts by generous people,  school and churches are delivered to the headquarters in Mitcham. There, after a short training session,  volunteers stand in a processing line ( defined by age group and whether for boys or girls ) to check the contents of each box , and additional toys, stationery or something to wear are filled into the boxes before they are labelled and taped.

Today was a special day as these cartons are loaded onto a container.  It will be shipped to Cambodia and carries thousands of gift boxes which bring cheer and delight to kids who may have never received a gift before.

Since it started in 1993, more than 100 million shoeboxes have been given in over 130 countries.

It was a day well spent, to be a part of this unique project which reaches out to needy children by the simple giving of a gift-filled shoebox.

Volunteers are most welcomed at this time.  Contact Samaritan’s Purse tel: 1800 684 300 or go to operationchristmaschild.org.au for more information.
